It’s Spring, Let’s paint that Cincinnati exterior!

There are a few great reasons to do Cincinnati exterior painting in the Spring. First, it’s nice outside. Working outside in the spring is like playing in the garden. The days start out nice and mild and warms as you go so you can schedule your exterior painting around the day. You can even stop in the heat of the day and finish up in the late afternoon. Make sure you have at least 50 degrees and above before you start the job so it will dry properly. Also, avoid rain for at least 24 hours.

Spring is also better for the paint itself. Paint needs to dry slowly and exterior latex paint provides the most protective, durable surface when the weather is mild. Too much heat can cause paint to dry too fast and not adhere well. Also, plan  your project away from windy days because wind can dry paint too fast just like the sun can. Secondly, if you like to garden or you mulch around your house, you need to paint before the ladders chew up your garden and yard. Ladders can be rough on those summer plants and shrubs. If your soil is moist, the ladder may sink down and cut roots so be careful. Painting earlier in the Spring gives your garden more time to “bounce back” from the abuse.

The third reason to do it in the spring is that you haven’t brought out all of the yard toys yet. After you have painted, you can pull out the grills, the corn-hole games, the patio equipment, and the baby pools. Working around all of those obstructions while doing your Cincinnati painting job will be a nuisance as well as a hazard. Keep all of that stuff in the shed until you get the exterior painting done.

As always, whenever you do the job, make certain that you prepare the wood surfaces well with a sanding and a primer if needed. All new surfaces should always be primed and older walls will need to be spot painted with primer where the old paint has been sanded or scraped off.

Another “always” I recommend is using the highest quality 100% acrylic latex paint that you can afford. If you are trying to cheapen a painting job, don’t do it with low quality paint. Top quality paints can often lasts2 times longer than the cheaper paints which can reduce your labor time and save you money.  To increase the life of your Cincinnati exterior paint job, always apply at least two coats – either a coat of primer and a coat of paint, or two coats of house paint.
